“Most fans, think that the player’s lives are glamorous, and that players, wives, and families do not have any problems that non-public families face; which is not true. In fact, we face more physical, emotional, financial, divorce, and stressful situations simultaneously that money can not solve than most people face in a lifetime.”
– Gena Pitts, married for 23 years to former NFL defensive lineman, Mike Pitts, who played for the Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles, and New England Patriots, and Founder and Publisher of The Professional Sports Wives Magazine
Erin posted this quote on her blog this past week, and I could not help but share. I have often been asked what it is like to be married to a basketball player. I usually do reply that it is like being married to anyone else, but in reality, it is not. There are a unique set of circumstances and stresses that make our marriage highly unique. The more time that I spend understanding, accepting, and learning from this reality, the better equipped I am to deal with the ups and downs of basketball.
Erin is doing a series on what it is like to be a basketball wife, and I think she is doing a wonderful job. If you are interested in what it is like, visit her blog. I write pretty long comments, but when she is finished, I am going to offer some differring perspectives for those wives who are staying behind while our husband’s travel overseas.
Is being “too tired” a cop-out (I have A LOT to say about this, and while I have commented on Erin’s blog, I will be writing a post from the working mother’s perspective.)
(I’ll try to remember to come back and add the rest of the posts in the series as they become available.)
